What is tooth extraction?

Tooth extraction is an in-office dental procedure to remove a tooth that’s causing issues with your oral health. At Cannon Oral Surgery, Dr. Cannon performs tooth extractions and can discuss your options for replacing your missing teeth if necessary. 

Before your extraction, Dr. Cannon discusses your anesthesia options and helps you select an option to keep you relaxed and comfortable. He also tells you whether you’ll need a simple or surgical extraction:

Simple extractions

Simple extractions usually require only local anesthesia, but Dr. Cannon might recommend additional sedation if you’re nervous or apprehensive about the procedure. 

Surgical extractions

Surgical extractions are a bit more complex than simple extractions for several reasons. In some cases, you might require general anesthesia. In some cases, Dr. Cannon can remove your tooth whole, and in others, he may need to section it into pieces. 

Why do I need a tooth extraction?

There are several reasons why Dr. Cannon or another dentist might recommend one or more extractions as part of your treatment. You might need a tooth extraction because of:

Sometimes, tooth extraction isn’t a treatment for a condition or complication. You might need a tooth extraction in preparation for your orthodontic treatment like braces or aligners. This kind of tooth extraction can prepare your mouth as your teeth will move and shift throughout your orthodontic treatment. 

How should I care for my mouth after a tooth extraction?

At Cannon Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Cannon gives you detailed instructions to follow as you heal after an extraction. Following that guidance helps you avoid complications like a dry socket, which happens when a blood clot either doesn’t form in the socket or dislodges to expose your bone. 

To avoid dry sockets, prolonged bleeding, and infections, Dr. Cannon recommends you:

• Bite on a gauze pad for 45 minutes after the extraction
• Avoid using straws for 72 hours
• Avoid smoking and alcohol for at least 72 hours
• Rinse your mouth gently, not vigorously
• Avoid the extraction site while brushing for 72 hours
• Limit vigorous exercise for at least 24 hours
• Use an ice pack to minimize swelling
• Use medications like antibiotics and pain medications as directed
• Drink lots of fluid and eat soft foods only as you heal

You should feel fine after a few days of limited activity and can resume your normal routine within two to three days.
